Welcome to Year 4!

We have had a great week this week in year 4!

In our Romans topic, we enjoyed acting out the battle formations that Roman soldiers would have used, such as the tortoise and the wedge, using the shields that we made on our immersion day.

Linked to our topic, in Literacy we researched the destruction of Pompeii and started learning the features of newspaper articles to enable us to write our own articles next week about the events of that catastrophic day in 79AD.  We interviewed each other as eyewitnesses to the events and this gave us the opportunity to practice our speech punctuation.

In maths we have been developing our understanding of decimal place value (using a variety of equipment such as Dienes blocks to help us understand, for example, that a tenth is ten times smaller than a 'one') and linking decimals to fractions.  Next week, we continue our develop our understanding of decimals which will lead into learning about money.

We have been learning some new counting games, which you can try at home as a family!  Here is one of them.  Sit round a table or in a circle and elect a leader.  The leader chooses which number you will start counting at and the interval, e.g. counting in 2s, starting at 11.  The leader also chooses who will start.  Then start counting, around the circle, while the leader times for 45 seconds.  When the time is up, the person who the counting stops at stands up and says their number – this is your score.  Then repeat with the same starting number and interval, and see if you can beat your score!  Everyone will get more confident and you will find that you score much higher the second time!  This is a fun, simple game that can be easily made harder or easier as appropriate.  Try counting in fractions, e.g. quarters or tenths, or decimals!

In PSHE, we have been learning about our school value of the month, responsibility.  We looked at how we can take responsibility for the year 4 block, and the children came up with some great ideas about how we can improve the building and how we can use it better.  Next week, we will be learning about how we can take more responsibility for our learning and ways we can be actively engaged in the learning process.

In science, we will be starting our exciting new topic of electricity, learning about what makes a complete circuit.

Our class assemblies are approaching!  The dates are: Tuesday 30th January (Penguins), Thursday 1st February (Polar Bears) and Friday 2nd February (Seals).  We will be allocating roles and sending scripts home shortly so please look out for those.  We are also in the process of allocating roles for our Year 3 and 4 production in March.

Finally, as a year group, we are finalizing a timetable for interventions for children requiring additional support in reading, writing or maths.  We are aiming to start these groups week commencing 22nd January.

Have a lovely weekend and as always thank you for all your help and support.
