Welcome to Year 5!

We hope you have all had a good weekend and enjoyed the unexpected sunshine of Sunday.

This week, in literacy,  we are continuing with our focus on sentence construction and the use of descriptive vocabulary by using different film clips as a stimulus. In maths, we are continuing with multiplication for a while longer as most children are grasping how to multiply by a two digit number using a method which is easiest for them. We will then be moving onto division. We have emphasised the importance of knowing tables to the children and they should be coming home with a targetted table for them to focus on this week. Those children who already know all of their tables will have a weekly task which involves them having a task which involves knowing all their tables up the X12.

In topic, we will be continuing with our Shackelton journey, recording various events by means of diary writing. Our ‘building a tent’ project continues with children testing various materials. By the end of the week, we should have finished this and the children are being asked to construct their own tent as a homework project over a two week period. Further details will be sent home as each class reaches that stage.

On Monday afternoons the children have outdoor games and now that the weather is getting colder, it might be a good idea if the children have some trach-suit trousers included with their games kit.

On Wednesday we will be celebrating harvest and a local vicar will be coming into school to lead the assembly. Thank you for all your contributions so far. Children should leave their contributions in the school entrance hall and the goods will be delivered on Friday to the Dorking food and goods bank who are organising the allocation of the proceeds.

It was good to see so many of you at our curriculum meetings last week. We have asked that each of the powerpoints which were delivered to be put on the school website. This might take a few days for the technical staff to put this in place. Meanwhile, we are enclosing a list of recommended books and authors suitable for Year 5 children.

Again, this letter is being sent to you via class reps for Wolves and Dingoes and hopefully by the end of the week there should be a class rep for Foxes.

We look forward to meeting you next week at our Parent-Teacher consultations so we can discuss how your child has settled into their new year group.

Kind regards

The Year 5 Team
